Today, I am going to tell you about this thing that ruined every teenager’s life. And I mean every single teenager. Not Google classroom deadlines or poor Wi-Fi connection in the Philippines, but the one that took our freedom from doing the things that we normally do in our everyday lives. The one that destroyed millions of lives. The one that killed our loved ones, COVID-19. Ever since March of 2020 we have been locked down in our houses, forced to stare at our screens to attend online classes, ruin our body clocks, and wreck our mental health. And after long months of this vicious cycle a lot of us has lost hope, almost all of us are drained trying to fight to live another day. It’s been almost a year, and still, nothing has changed. There’s still no mass testing, there are still those who can’t afford masks and face shields, there’s still no vaccines. Hopeless, right? I am speaking in front of a camera right now because I was tasked to give a speech on “how and what to ...

You were not able to prepare for your graded report in Oral Communication. Mr. Reyes, then calls you to go to the front and start your presentation. How are you going to explain your situation yo your teacher? First, i would take a step back, and breathe. The responsible thing to do here is to admit that I made a mistake and face the consequences that will come with it. I would say it directly to the point without any ambiguity, and I will take responsibility with humility. After apologizing, I would do anything in my power to make it right if I were given the chance. Your cousin, Karl, calls you over the phone and tells you that he cannot help you in your errand because he needs to do something for his school project. What will you tell him to convince him to spare you a bit of his time and that you need him to buy the surprise birthday gift for your father? I would politely ask him again to help me with my errand. I would tell him how much I would appreciate it if he...

How do you usually start a conversation? Based on the lesson, I have found out that I usually start a conversation with a "nomination" approach. This is when a person starts a conversation by asking a question, giving a compliment, or asking for opinions. I use this approach every day with my family and my friends. An advantage of this communicative strategy is that it is very casual, and it does not require formal speech. Moreover, it urges the receiver to send a feedback to the original sender of a message, thus creating a smooth flow of communication. Give a specific problem that you encountered during a conversation and how did you address it? A specific problem I encountered was when I entered a national inter-school industrial engineering competition. When the organization that hosted the competition announced their guidelines, it amassed a lot of confusion because there were a great deal of discrepancies in the given guidelines. In order to not panic and be a part of ...

In your own words, differentiate LOCUTIONARY, ILLOCUTIONARY, PERLOCUTIONARY and give at least 1 example for each (not copied from the handout). There are three types of speech acts: the locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts. Locutionary acts refer to the action of saying or uttering a statement. For an act to be locutionary, it needs to share the same meaning for both the speaker and receiver and it needs to be sensible. The next speech act is the illocutionary act. These acts are performed by speakers and commits them to a future action. Examples of an illocutionary act are giving promises and oaths. Moreover, giving opinions and permission to other people are examples of illocutionary acts. Lastly, is the perlocutionary act. This type of speech act pertains to the consequence of what a speaker has said. To give you a clearer picture, I will state examples for each type of speech act. First is the locutionary act, the actual act of uttering or saying a...

Which of the types of speech context do you find easy and difficult to practice? What should you do to improve your skills? Personally, I find intrapersonal communication easier to practice than interpersonal communication. To fully justify my opinion, let us first define the two. Intrapersonal communication as communication with one's self. Examples are self-talk, acts of visualization, and imagination. On the other hand interpersonal communication is the process of exchanging communication between two or more people. As an introvert, I find intrapersonal communication easier to practice because I will be able to express feelings without the anxiety that people will not approve of it. Moreover, I will be able to exercise my mind with various thought processes. Furthermore, you will be able to use any type of speech style that you want. On the other hand, I will be able to dev...

How can you improve your communication with your classmates, family members, teachers, etc. using verbal and non-verbal communication? First and foremost, to become a good communicator, I first have to become a good listener because once I improve my listening skills, I will be able to give appropriate responses to the messages that people will give me; which leads to the first step in being a better communicator: appropriateness. I always have to be appropriate because it will enable me to better understand the nature or context of someone's message. Next I ought to be concise with my words. This will reduce the ambiguity of the messages that I will be delivering. Next, I should always have clarity. Having a clear message using simple words will ensure that the receiver of my message will not be misinterpreted. Moreover, I should always be mindful of who my audiences are. This will reduce discriminatory remarks that I may accidentally give. Next, I should exchange information in a...

Differentiate verbal and non-verbal communication Verbal communication is when a speaker utilizes words in order to convey his/her message. Verbal communication is a vital piece to a person's human life because it narrows the gap between people. Moreover, verbal communication is very effective because it makes it possible for people to disseminate information faster while being accurate. Some examples of using verbal communication are meetings, conferences, and casual conversations. On the other hand, non-verbal communication refers to the collective use of movement that does not involve speaking or any type of verbal communication. In non-verbal communication, one can convey his/her message by the use of hand gestures, body language, or even facial expressions. Non-verbal communication is important especially if verbal communication is not suffice to deliver a message. One of the most prominent examples of non-verbal communication is the use of sign language.

How does communication breakdown affect our relationships with other people? Poor communication skills ultimately lead to communication breakdowns, these communication breakdowns make it difficult for people to express their thoughts, opinions, and feelings. Communication breakdowns can negatively affect relationships because they can lead to the misinterpretations of ideas. If one person cannot process a message whether verbal or non-verbal, then they would not be able to transmit appropriate replies or reactions. In the video, the couple were experiencing psychological barriers - the guy did not understand and did not pay attention to the social cues that the girl was giving him. There are three types of speeches according to purpose, they may be: informative, persuasive, or entertainment speech. Can you recall an experience in your life where you experienced communication breakdown? What happened and why did the breakdown occur? (answer in not less than 5 sentences). When we spent New Year's Eve in Japan, me and my mother experienced communication breakdowns every time we talked to the Japanese. This is caused by lingustic barriers like my limited knowledge in Japanese and the Japanese's lack of knowledge in English. This linguistic barrier caused us to get lost in the subway, ride the wrong train, and order the wrong food. We ended up using our mobile devices for directions instead of consulting locals.

Why is effective communication important in your day-to-day life as a student? How can you communicate more effectively? Effective communication as a student can lead to three things, less errors, a better student-teacher relationship, and good grades. First of all, through effective communication, you would find yourself having less mistakes in schoolworks, quizzes, or exams. This is because communicating effectively with your classmates and teachers would help understand concepts and instructions faster. Second, with effective communication, you will be able to build a better relationship with your peers or your professors; not being afraid of talking to your professors would help you understand the different perspectives that you need for a certain lesson/subject. Combining these two: less mistakes and a better atmosphere between your peers and professors would help you keep motivated. Catalla, Ancelmo Miguel M. | Oral Comm | 11 - Auriga Reflection 1. How do you describe the elements of communication? The elements of communication are dynamic. They are part of an interdependent system or process. If one goes missing, the whole communication process will not take place. 2. Can the process of communication be completed even without the presence of a single element of communication? Why or why not? Communication is a process that requires various elements, so if one element is not present, the whole process would be inoperative. For instance, if there is no speaker, there will be no message. If there is no message, the channel and medium would be useless, so no one will be the recipient of the message. Thus, communication will not take place. 3. Cite at least one communication situation and identify the elements in the presented situation. There is an ongoing Zoom meeting between ...
