Week 1- Discussion (Second Quarter)

How do you usually start a conversation?

Based on the lesson, I have found out that I usually start a conversation with a "nomination" approach. This is when a person starts a conversation by asking a question, giving a compliment, or asking for opinions. I use this approach every day with my family and my friends. An advantage of this communicative strategy is that it is very casual, and it does not require formal speech. Moreover, it urges the receiver to send a feedback to the original sender of a message, thus creating a smooth flow of communication.

Give a specific problem that you encountered during a conversation and how did you address it?

A specific problem I encountered was when I entered a national inter-school industrial engineering competition. When the organization that hosted the competition announced their guidelines, it amassed a lot of confusion because there were a great deal of discrepancies in the given guidelines. In order to not panic and be a part of the problem, I offered to contact the organization to clear out any mishaps regarding their rules. After initiating the conversation with the organization, the guidelines were then fixed, and the rules were now clearer. This just shows that the initiation of communication is vital when trying to fix problems.

Recall an instance where you engaged in a conversation with a topic that you are not comfortable with. What is the topic and how did you manage it?

As a journalist, I am vocal with my opinions in social media, particularly about sexual harassment and social injustices. When I try to explain my opinions on social media, I understand that there will be people who will not agree with me, and some even attack me personally. One specific conversation that I had was when I was saying that President Duterte's rampant foul mouthing has tolerated and encouraged Filipinos to do bad things, and a social media troll attacked me and said that I was "bogok." Instead of attacking him too, I took the high road and I tried to understand him.
