Week 4 - Discussion 1

How can communication breakdowns be avoided?

In order to avoid communication breakdowns, you can follow the 7Cs of Effective Communication from the book Effective Public Relations:
1. Completeness- the sender should include everything that the receiver needs to hear, respond, react or evaluate properly.
2. Conciseness- the message should be direct or straight to the point.
3. Consideration- the speaker should consider the background of the audience like culture, education, religion, status, mood, feelings, and needs.
4. Concreteness- the message is backed up by facts, figures, and real-life examples or situations.
5. Courtesy - the speaker/sender must respect his/her receivers.
6. Clearness- it suggests the use of simpler and more specific words.
7. Correctness - the credibility of the message is improved by avoiding grammatical mistakes.
