Week 3 - Discussion 1

QUESTIONS:

1. What are the communication barriers that the 2 persons experienced?

2. Why does breakdown of communication occur?

3. What is AFAM? What is Jacky Lou? What is Gold Digger?

4. What are the issues of the girl? Enumerate and explain.

5. Can their situation be resolved/improved? If yes, why and how? If no explain why.

1. The woman was experiencing psychological barriers because as she stated, she was "stressed out" and tired of the stereotypes that people were giving her. She was also not confident enough to speak in English. On the other hand, both of them were having linguistic barriers because the guy cannot understand Filipino, while the woman was having difficulty in speaking in English.

2. The breakdown occured because of the communication barriers that they were facing.

3. AFAM is an acronym for "a foreigner assigned in Manila." Meanwhile, Jacky Lou is an idiomatic expression that came from "jackpot" and the Filipino word "lugi." In the video, the context was that the girl won a "jackpot" for having an AFAM boyfriend, while the guy was "lugi" because he had her as a love partner, hence Jacky Lou. And lastly, a gold digger is someone who forms relationships with the sole intention of taking money from his/her partner.

4. The girl stated that she was stressed out of translating every Filipino sentence she says into English. She was also tired of people that were stereotyping her as a gold digger because she had a foreigner as a boyfriend.

5. If there were more patience on the girl's side, and if the guy did compromises by trying to learn better, then they would not have problems. but I think the root of their problems that needs to be resolved is the stereotyping of people who try to speak in English. This stereotyping causes people to have psychological barriers that ultimately lead to a communication breakdown.
