Week 1 - Reflection

Catalla, Ancelmo Miguel M. | Oral Comm | 11 - Auriga Reflection

1. How do you describe the elements of communication?

The elements of communication are dynamic. They are part of an interdependent system or process. If one goes missing, the whole communication process will not take place.

2. Can the process of communication be completed even without the presence of a single element of communication? Why or why not?

Communication is a process that requires various elements, so if one element is not present, the whole process would be inoperative. For instance, if there is no speaker, there will be no message. If there is no message, the channel and medium would be useless, so no one will be the recipient of the message. Thus, communication will not take place.

3. Cite at least one communication situation and identify the elements in the presented situation.

There is an ongoing Zoom meeting between a teacher and her class. The teacher was talking about the difference between the definitions of a “language” and a “dialect.” Unfortunately, there was a typhoon passing the teacher’s town, causing her internet connection to be unstable, making her camera freeze. Then the students immediately informed the teacher that they cannot understand her.

Speaker: Teacher
Message: The teacher was defining the words: language, and dialect
Channel: She was using the communication app “Zoom”
Receiver: Students
Context: There was an ongoing online synchronous class
Barriers: Unstable internet connection
Feedback: The students informed the teacher that they cannot understand her
