Week 4 - Discussion 2

Do you agree that becoming a strong and effective communicator takes time and practice? Why or why not? Much like professional athletes or politicians, great communicators are made and not born. Being a good listener, connecting to people, and reading body language are skills that are practiced throughout time. These are the skills that we are born with, we practice them throughout our lives.

Week 4 - Discussion 1

How can communication breakdowns be avoided? In order to avoid communication breakdowns, you can follow the 7Cs of Effective Communication from the book  Effective Public Relations: 1. Completeness- the sender should include everything that the receiver needs to hear, respond, react or evaluate properly. 2. Conciseness- the message should be direct or straight to the point. 3. Consideration- the speaker should consider the background of the audience like culture, education, religion, status, mood, feelings, and needs. 4. Concreteness- the message is backed up by facts, figures, and real-life examples or situations. 5. Courtesy - the speaker/sender must respect his/her receivers. 6. Clearness- it suggests the use of simpler and more specific words. 7. Correctness - the credibility of the message is improved by avoiding grammatical mistakes.

Week 3 - Discussion 2

Can you recall an experience in your life where you experienced communication breakdown? What happened and why did the breakdown occur? (answer in not less than 5 sentences). When we spent New Year's Eve in Japan, me and my mother experienced communication breakdowns every time we talked to the Japanese. This is caused by lingustic barriers like my limited knowledge in Japanese and the Japanese's lack of knowledge in English. This linguistic barrier caused us to get lost in the subway, ride the wrong train, and order the wrong food. We ended up using our mobile devices for directions instead of consulting locals.

She was also not confident enough to speak in English. On the other hand, both of them were having linguistic barriers because the guy cannot understand Filipino, while the woman was having difficulty in speaking in English. 2. The breakdown occured because of the communication barriers that they were facing. 3. AFAM is an acronym for "a foreigner assigned in Manila." Meanwhile, Jacky Lou is an idiomatic expression that came from "jackpot" and the Filipino word "lugi....

Week 1 - Discussion 1

Why is effective communication important in your day-to-day life as a student? How can you communicate more effectively? Effective communication as a student can lead to three things, less errors, a better student-teacher relationship, and good grades. First of all, through effective communication, you would find yourself having less mistakes in schoolworks, quizzes, or exams. This is because communicating effectively with your classmates and teachers would help understand concepts and instructions faster. Second, with effective communication, you will be able to build a better relationship with your peers or your professors; not being afraid of talking to your professors would help you understand the different perspectives that you need for a certain lesson/subject. Combining these two: less mistakes and a better atmosphere between your peers and professors would help you keep motivated. Week 1 - Reflection

Catalla, Ancelmo Miguel M. | Oral Comm | 11 - Auriga Reflection 1. How do you describe the elements of communication? The elements of communication are dynamic. They are part of an interdependent system or process. If one goes missing, the whole communication process will not take place. 2. Can the process of communication be completed even without the presence of a single element of communication? Why or why not? Communication is a process that requires various elements, so if one element is not present, the whole process would be inoperative. For instance, if there is no speaker, there will be no message. If there is no message, the channel and medium would be useless, so no one will be the recipient of the message. Thus, communication will not take place. 3. Cite at least one communication situation and identify the elements in the presented situation. There is an ongoing Zoom meeting between ...
