Week 7 - Discussion 2

How can you improve your communication with your classmates, family members, teachers, etc. using verbal and non-verbal communication? First and foremost, to become a good communicator, I first have to become a good listener because once I improve my listening skills, I will be able to give appropriate responses to the messages that people will give me; which leads to the first step in being a better communicator: appropriateness. I always have to be appropriate because it will enable me to better understand the nature or context of someone's message. Next I ought to be concise with my words. This will reduce the ambiguity of the messages that I will be delivering. Next, I should always have clarity. Having a clear message using simple words will ensure that the receiver of my message will not be misinterpreted. Moreover, I should always be mindful of who my audiences are. Week 7 - Discussion 1

 Differentiate verbal and non-verbal communication Verbal communication is when a speaker utilizes words in order to convey his/her message. Verbal communication is a vital piece to a person's human life because it narrows the gap between people. Moreover, verbal communication is very effective because it makes it possible for people to disseminate information faster while being accurate. Some examples of using verbal communication are meetings, conferences, and casual conversations.  On the other hand, non-verbal communication refers to the collective use of movement that does not involve speaking or any type of verbal communication. In non-verbal communication, one can convey his/her message by the use of hand gestures, body language, or even facial expressions. Non-verbal communication is important especially if verbal communication is not suffice to deliver a message. One of the most prominent examples of non-verbal communication is the use of sign language.

How does communication breakdown affect our relationships with other people?   Poor communication skills ultimately lead to communication breakdowns, these communication breakdowns make it difficult for people to express their thoughts, opinions, and feelings. Communication breakdowns can negatively affect relationships because they can lead to the misinterpretations of ideas. If one person cannot process a message whether verbal or non-verbal, then they would not be able to transmit appropriate replies or reactions. In your own words, what are the different types of speech according to purpose and delivery? There are three types of speeches according to purpose, they may be: informative, persuasive, or entertainment speech. The first type which is the informative speech, is mainly conducted to to disseminate information to an audience. An example of this is a lecture of a professor, this type of speech is also known as "expository." The second type is the persuasive speech, which is performed with the purpose of convincing an audience to what the speaker is saying. Some examples of people who give persuasive speeches are politicians and litigating lawyers. The last type of speech according to purpose is the entertainment speech, which seeks to bring laughter or joy to an audience. An example of this type is a skit of a comedian.
